About Omet
Omet is a live video chat platform for one-on-one conversations online, at omet.live. This page says what that means, who is behind it, and where the limits are.
What Omet is
Omet is a browser-based live video chat service. You open it, you are connected to one other person, and the two of you talk face to face in real time. There is no app to install, no group room, and no audience watching the call.
It runs on phones and on desktops, and the phone layout is the one that was designed first — portrait, large controls, overlays you can read at arm's length in daylight.
The brand is spelled Omet, one word, and the site lives at omet.live. That is the only spelling we use, anywhere.
Why it exists
Every product in this category has settled on the same answer to the same problem. The problem is that two strangers on a video call often have nothing to say to each other. The answer, almost everywhere, is to make it faster to leave: a bigger skip button, a shorter queue, a higher throughput of people you did not talk to.
That works, in the sense that it produces a lot of connections. It just does not produce many conversations. Omet is the version of this product that takes the other side of the bet — that the call you are already in is worth more attention than the next one.
The choices behind it
These are the things Omet gives up, which is why they are worth stating: a list of sacrifices is the one part of a positioning that a competitor cannot simply paste onto their own site.
Openers are published, not promised
The homepage carries a deck of conversation openers you can read before you connect. They sit on the page, in plain text, so you can read them before you ever press start. They are deliberately not described as an in-call feature, because they are not one — and a landing page that implies an interface the next screen does not have is worse than no landing page at all.
The price is on the homepage
Calls are paid, and each person sets their own rate. On a matched call the rate appears on screen before charging starts. We say that calls are paid on the homepage rather than only in the Terms, because finding it out mid-conversation is the worst moment this product can give someone.
The name
Omet is one word, spelled one way, and it is the name of this service. If you are curious about the word itself, the homepage has what Omet means.
What will never appear here
- Invented numbers — user counts, ratings, awards, "trusted by" logos.
- A feature described in the future tense as though it already shipped.
- Explicit positioning. Omet is a mainstream video chat service, and the age requirement lives in the Terms where it belongs.
Reaching us
Questions, reports and press all go through the same place: the contact page. If something on this site is wrong, that is the fastest way to tell us, and we would rather hear it.
