From first tap to last word

How Omet works, from the first tap to the end of a call

Omet is a live one-on-one video chat, and this is exactly what happens when you use it: how you get connected, what a call costs and when you find out, how to move on, and what to do if someone crosses a line.

Getting connected

Two ways to start a call.

A

Get matched

Press Start Video Chat and Omet connects you with someone who is available now. It is the quickest route, and the one the homepage buttons use.

B

Choose who to call

Prefer to pick? Look at who is online first and call the person you want to talk to. Nothing is charged for looking.

Either way you open omet.live in your browser and you are signed in as a guest straight away, with no profile to build before your first call. On a phone, video chat in the mobile browser covers camera permissions and adding Omet to your home screen.

Inside a matched call

On a matched call, you see the rate before you pay it.

The part people worry about most is the moment a call starts costing money. On a matched call that moment is announced on screen, with the rate, before it happens.

  1. 01 / CONNECT

    The call opens

You are live with one person, face to face. A countdown runs at the start of a matched call before any charge applies.

  2. 02 / NOTICE

    The rate appears on screen

Shortly before the countdown ends, the call shows a notice with that person's rate per minute and how many seconds are left before charging starts.

  3. 03 / DECIDE

    Stay or leave

End the call or move on before the countdown finishes and nothing is charged for it. Stay, and charging starts — the call timer restarts from zero so you can see it.

  4. 04 / CONTINUE

Talk as long as it is good

Charged per minute from the coins you hold. If your balance runs low, you are offered a top-up before it runs out rather than being cut off without warning.

Paying for calls

Coins in advance, a rate per person, no subscription.

Calls are paid

Omet is not a free unlimited service, and it says so on the homepage. New accounts may get a few free tries; how many is decided per account, so we do not promise a number.

Each person sets a rate

There is no single price to quote, because there is no single price. The rate is per minute and belongs to the person you are talking to.

Coins, bought first

Calls are paid from coins you buy in advance. Card details are handled by the payment provider and are not stored by Omet.

Moving on

You can always leave a call.

If a matched call is not going anywhere, move on to the next person or end it. Leaving is always available. If it is going well, you do not have to do anything at all — which is the point of a conversation-first video chat.

It goes well more often when you arrive with something to say. The conversation starters are sixty questions sorted by how far into a call they work.

If something goes wrong

Report it, block it, and it stays blocked.

What you can do

  • Report someone. Reports are reviewed by a person.
  • Block someone. A block is permanent.
  • Accounts removed for breaking the rules cannot simply sign up again.

What Omet does not do

  • Record your calls.
  • Sell your personal data.
  • Routinely read your messages — only what is attached to a report.
